I am confounded by Japan's attempts to stop the comfort women monument.
Why does Japan officially try to oppose these monuments (this one and the one in front of the Japanese embassy in Seoul)? It is very hard to understand that mentality of trying to ask groups to "not remember history". The Japan of the past is the Japan of the past. Japan today should fully support monuments for remembering the tragedy of the mistakes made in that era.
When there are thousands of victims, many still alive, how can it possibly help Japan's image to oppose monuments to remember the tragedy?
When a mistake has been made in history, and people suffered, it is natural to leave a monument to remember and not repeat similar mistakes.
One of the most important points in this article is when the Korean group who built the monument for the comfort women explain that Japan's opposition is "helping" the monument. That is only natural. Nobody is going to support Japan's attempt to stop a monument for people who suffered.
In fact, Japan is going to completely embarrass itself when people around world (based on articles like this) see it as a country that is unwilling to accept the mistakes of its past as lessons for the future.
As a long time resident of Japan, I love the "new Japan" that strives to build a culture of peace. Just as the future children of the USA need to know the past mistakes of the USA, Japanese children need to be taught the tragedies brought about by the mistakes of the military government. Through history classes and monuments in and out of Japan, the mistakes should be brought to light as clearly as possible so that future generations do not repeat them.

Thanks for the comments. I always keep an open mind about the possibility that I have been misled .
返信削除However, to me, the YouTube video that is linked from the comment above seems terribly biased and unpersuasive.
The main problems are:
1. Who made the video? There is no name on it. Are they ashamed to show their identity?
2. What sources are being referred to? Very few sources of information are indicated.
3. What evidence are they deliberately ignoring. Even the short Wikipedia page on comfort women has better information than this video.
This makes THAT video a propaganda video, a emotional, manipulative message with a political purpose.
For those who seek truth and justice, the video is an insult. If the producer disagrees, I'd like to see a revision that solves the problems above.
Granted, there may be some dispute about whether the number of forced cases and rape and brutality. Was 2, 2,000, or 200,000? We may never know since the girls in the worst cases were killed to eliminate the evidence.
However, if even ONE case of forced prostitution or rape occurred, it should be condemned. If even one brothel was military sponsored, financed, or condoned, that should be condemned as well. There is plenty to regret and apologize for, and the video misses the mark on those points of priority by shifting the argument to another case in Vietnam, which should also be condemned if true.
Also, it may be true that some women "volunteered". I agree that the reality of "freedom of choice" is a key issue in this case regarding the degree of criminal responsibility the Japanese army should account for.
So, the key question is: Is there sufficient evidence that any women (even one) were prostitutes for the Japanese army AGAINST their will in some way? I agree that each case should be carefully examined, and if it such forced violations existed, there should be due apologies, compensations, and criminal prosecutions, as well as putting them in historical documents and monuments.
If even one tragic case occurred, there should be a monument for it.
Also, interested readers should check out:

This is a link to a review of one of the most extensive academic examinations of this issue by Hicks:
George Hicks. The Comfort Women: Japan's Brutal Regime of Enforced Prostitution in the Second World War. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1995. 303 pp. Illustrations, annotated bibliography, index. $25.00 (cloth), ISBN 0-393-03807-6.
If anyone feels the comfort women do not need a monument, they need to read this treatise first and refute the evidence.
Obviously, as with any book on a historical topic, there are points that could be researched, or documented or supported more, but the record seems quite extensive.
The link to the Amazon book is here, and the reviews are very interesting.

"One star" reviews by two Japanese reviewers attempt a rebuttal, though weak, and I think these opposing views should also be carefully considered because rhetoric against war time atrocities can turn into an emotional game of demonization and "you are guilty unless proven innocent" attitude.
What the discussion should lead to is an open attitude of examining the facts and being ready to reveal and regret the darkest tragedies and understanding how they happened and how to avoid them in the future.
And in general, Japan has to remember it was the perpetrator. Even 60 years later, that is how the victims see it, and Japan has to continue to remember that.
It is natural for the criminal's family to want to forget the atrocity and move on. It is natural for the victim's family to remember the atrocity and continue to demand accountability. It is important for both sides to work together to reveal what happened as objectively as possible.
And I say this as a person who loves the peaceful Japan today. And I also admit that my knowledge of the facts may be limited, and am happy to hear different arguments and further evidence for all viewpoints if they are rationally and ethically stated with integrity.

Dear commenter,
返信削除Is that video a sincere attempt to determine the truth about the accounts of the comfort women?
What was the purpose of the production? It does not look like an ethical, rational examination of the key issue, which is whether the Japanese military should be held responsible for forced prostitution during WWII.
I watched the video, but frankly, I think it hurts your argument more than it helps it. The attempt to discredit the comfort women by attacking their culture in a one-sided way lacks persuasiveness. It also lacks integrity.

There are enormous amount of porn movies, animations and games produced in Japan featuring rape scenes (disgusting).
They are produced because they are sold. In fact, they've been making great sales.

Mark,
返信削除From a graduate from ICU(left-ish school) and 4year univ in US. In case if you didnt know, this whole post-war shait between south korea and japan ENDED in 1965 by a treaty between the two countries by:
Signed peace treaty, gov't apology, and cash. period. But ppl including you still bring this up after 40 years for whatever reason is just hopeless. If you think above three things were not good enough, what can be btwn two nations?
Will you prosecute your students for smokin in the ICU restroom after 40 years?
The whole statue issue is just another catchy performance to gather people's attention, collect money, and to create a fait accompli bastardising the effort by two countries 40yrs ago. I repeat this sht ended 40 years ago officially, even before you were born. Thank your dads generation for ending it and dont bring this up in 2013, our generation.
It's such a shame how people around the world are being deceived by Koreans.
返信削除Given the fact that Korea was part of Japan during WW2, Japan is not even obligated to compensate anything to Korea, especially for those well-paid prostitutes. Nevertheless, Japan agreed to compensate in the form of ODA, that specifically included "personal compensation". It was a legitimate treaty between two nations and it's not something you can disregard. Would that be Japanese problem if Korean gov spent away most "personal compensation" for the investment, such as "Miracle of Han river"? Would that be Japanese problem if Korean gov did not disclose this information to their citizen until 2005, by the time the criticism against Japan for CW is penetrated? Koreans say "Japan is not sorry enough", but does anyone even know the remose letter signed by ex-Prime minister Mr.Koizumi or the attempt by Japanese gov to provide the additional compensation for those CW who obviously was deceived or neglected by their own government? Tell me, is there any other countries who expressed sincere apologies like how Japan do?
I really hate Koreans because all they care is how to manipulate the world only to malign Japanese reputation. I feel sorry for you being deceived by them, but you need to speak based on factual basis, not by your empathy.

返信削除And comfort women were just prostitutes paid with incredibly high salary
返信削除It was evidenced by 'UNITED STATES OFFICE OF WAR INFORMATION,20 Korean Comfort Girls, Date: August 10, 1944'
In 1944, the U.S. Army wrote an interrogation report, "Japanese Prisoner of War Interrogation Report No.49", based on the information obtained from the interrogation of 20 Korean comfort women (aged 19-31) and 2 Japanese civilians captured in Burma. According to the report, the comfort women were "professional camp followers", i.e. prostitutes, and they were paid by the individual Japanese soldiers for their services; the comfort women had an average annual income 9000 yen (~$900,000 USD in today's money).
ttp://blogs.yahoo.c-o.jp/raindoropblue/15530328.ht-ml
Conclusion of the report
A "comfort girl" is nothing more than a prostitute or "professional camp follower" attached to the Japanese Army for the benefit of the soldiers.
---the average Korean "comfort girl" to be about 25 years old, uneducated, childish, and selfish. She is not pretty either by Japanese or Caucasian standards. She is inclined to be egotistical and likes to talk about herself.
While in Burma they amused themselves by participating in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners. The comfort women had an average annual income 9000 yen (By 1000 yen they could 1 house). ------
A Korean woman named Moon Ok-ju worked in Burma from 1943 to 1945 as a comfort woman. During the period of 2 years and 3 months, she accumulated 26,145 yen in deposits to her Japanese Post Office savings account. In the 1940s, this amount of money would have been enough to purchase five houses in Tokyo.
As far as I know, Park Geun-Hye has never mentioned the fact the comfort women were earning hundreds of thousands of dollars (in today's money).
President Park, stop going around the world and deceiving people!!
General officer Hideki Tojyou salary was 800 yen then.
The first comfort woman Kim Haku Sung, 金学順 was collected by a leftist JP politician Fukushima (naturalized Korean) by saying 'they may get compensation'. On August 14, 1991, she confessed at a press conference in Seoul,"I was sold to a brothel by my mom by 40 yen", but next time she said "I was taken by my father-in law there."
返信削除The second comfort woman 文玉珠 Mun Oak Ju collected by Fukushima, saved 26154 yen in her postal passbook as a prostitute for 2 years and 3 months (salary of ca. 1000 yen a month) sued Japanese government to give her money in it (Hideki Tojyo salary was 800 yen, a house could be built by 1000 yen). In the passbook there are records she had sent 5000 yen to her home.
Later she said her terrible brother used it.
Kim (1st bidder) and Mun (2nd) sued Japan government and in the trial it was evidenced they had worked as Kisen (Korean prostitutes) before they worked as comfort women. Kim had went to Kisen school, too. The womens' parole evidences are always untrustworthy like this and often changes.
There left some newspaper ads to recruits comfort women by Korean brothels. It says the salary was 880 yen(1500000 yen in today price) a month. The highest officer salary was 600-800 yen and the lowest solder's salary was 4-15 yen then.
Advance money was also paid that was over 3000 yen.
The other day an diary by Korean who had worked at a Korean brothel in ww2 was found in South Korea. By it, he sent many times very expensive money (600-1000 yen) for the comfort women's home. The women enjoyed movies, traveled and came home. There is a description of a farewell party. The army doctor brought incredible number of condoms to the brothel many times.
Here, their salary was proved to be very high.
How was comfort women fabricated as sex slaves?
返信削除Actually, there was no objective evidences of force by Japanese like documents, articles, diaries and witness by others or their families. But there left many evidences of kidnapped women by Koreans in newspaper articles then.
Before 1983, they were just prostitutes with incredibly high salary.
50% comfort women were Japanese called KARAYUKI-SAN and 20% were Koreans.
In 1977, a Japanese man named Seiji Yoshida wrote a book "My war crime" in which he wrote he and 8 coelleges kidnapped 230 Korean comfort women in Jeju-Island in Korea.
In 1989, his book was translated into Hangeul, and then the story was disseminated in South Korea. After the publication of the controversial book in South Korea, 許栄善, a Jeju-Island- based Korean news reporter, conducted interviews with many local people there, but they deied strongly the fact that those kind of kidnapping had been carried out.
One old Korean lady said, “There are only 250 houses here, many Korean young ladies were kidnapped? I haven’t heard such a story.”Also in 1989, 金奉玉, who is a Korea historian, said, “I have researched if the Yoshida’s story is true or not for long time, and I made sure the story was false, not true. I think being quite business-minded, Yoshida wrote this false story in his book.”
As she stated, actually Yoshida has never been to Jeju in ww2 and confessed later several times it was a fiction (in Shukan asahi magazine, etc) saying 'Books have to be interesting to be sold'.
Unfortunately, his story has already walked around by itself with Asahi newspaper since 1983.
”The Comfort Women” by George Hicks, Australian was written based on the Yoshida fabricated book. Andrew Gordon's book was written by the Hick book. Reference materials of Coomara- swamy report in 1996 by United Nation is based on the Hick book, too.
In 1959, South Korea signed in Japan‐Republic of Korea Basic Relations Treaty. All compensation was over on conditions that Japan abandoned all the assets (present 22 trillion yen) in South Korea and give compensation of present 2.2 trillion yen to South Korea, and South Korea made a pledge it would abandon all the right to demand anything on the past.
返信削除S.Korea did not say anything about this issue when both government signed "Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and Korea" in 1965. But in the preliminary discussion, South Korea said there are some prostitutes who are wanting their unpaid money.
Japan‐Republic of Korea Basic Relations Treaty included individual compensation and compensation for North Korea. But South Korea government spent it to its development and concealed the Treaty itself to the people until 2005.
Besides that,Japan had paid 70 trillion yen by ODA, etc. It has not returned the stadium construction fees of World Cup 2002 yet. And ca. 1 trillion yen were paid related with historical matters several times.
In Asian crisis in 1977, defaulted South Korea entered under the control of IMF. Japan gave 1.4 trillion yen to S Korean president Gim Dae-jung on condition it would abandon all the demand on the past. Otherwise, Japan aided South Korea then 10 trillion yen via IMF. And South Korea's money was unreliable, so Japan bank stood security for South Korea.
But this time, too, South Korea broke the pledge.
South Korea has concealed tremendous aids from Japan to its people. Japan has been always shadow ATM for South Korea. In return Japan has received incredible crazy anti-Japan discounting. Every day!
But compensation and apologize for what?
返信削除Alleyne Ireland, English colonization scholar who visited the British, American, French, Dutch, and Portuguese dependencies and stayed in Korea from 1926 wrote about annexation by Japan as the best annexation, especially in the the cultural and economic development of the people, as technique of administration'

"The evidence found that the Korean government directly controlled Korean comfort women in US army base villages."(Nov.9.2013)
http://jpkren.seesaa.net/article/3797
No proofs of force by Japanese (including army), but many proofs of kidnapping by Koreans.
返信削除There left many newspaper articles that proves the policemen in Korea (80% is Koreans) then were cracking down on bad Korean brokers and kidnappers.
From Mainichi daily article [Hanguel]1939,3.5, 'Korean Han Yumyon with his wife sold 150 poor daughters in villages of Manchuria and China. Furthermore, He was arrested sold 50 of them again to escape the arrogation by the police.'
From Mainichi daily article [Hanguel]1939,3.5, 'Korean Han Yumyon with his wife sold 150 poor daughters in villages to Manchuria and China. Furthermore, He was arrested by selling 50 of them again to escape the arrogation by the police.'
From Toua nippou daily(Korean newspaper) August 31,1939, 'the police arrested a group of Koreans who kidnapped 100 women and made them work at prostitute brothels.'
There are also newspaper articles Japanese girls were kidnapped and afterwards protected.
Mr. Oyama, historical researcher examined all the Asahi newspaper articles on kidnapping to brothels, and all the criminals were Koreans (0 Japanese).
There also left a police document to increase Korean policemen to crack down on bad Korean kidnappers because they kidnapped many women and sold them to brothels operated by Chinese. I'll translate more when I have time.
From Japanese documents
返信削除Japanese army had prohibited illegal recruiting of comfort women.
Army Notice No.2197 March 4,1938 says:
1. Comfort women are recruited by private brothels and soldiers must not be involved with this.
2. The brokers who did kidnapping should be punished.
3. Army must be very careful so that similar dishonor and illegal affairs may not occur.
Home Affairs Ministry Notice No.77 (1938,2 18) says recruiting must be done according to International laws and banned to subjugate and kidnap women.
Home Affairs Ministry Notice No.136 (1938,11 8) says comfort women for recruiting must be over 21 years-old and must be women who had already worked as professional prostitutes.
Very strict Japanese army law
Rape was sentenced to 7 years to life in jail.
Theft was 3 years in jail.
So, there was no hybrid children in all the wars.
In brothels condoms were used to prevent pregnancy and medical care were always carried to prevent disease.
Japanese has been a law-abiding nation.
Chou En-lai called Japanese law-abiding shit.
And many foreigners in old time wrote Japanese are honest and law-abiding from poverty to nobles.Law-abiding has been a Japanese culture basically.
Mahathir bin Mohamad in boy age saw Japanese soldiers buying items by money, and he believed in Japanese solders moral.
Exceptional affairs must have been rare.
As a proof, there is no hybrid children in several wars.
American left 500000 hybrid children in Vietnam.
Koreans left 20000-40000 hybrid children in Vietnam (Lai Dai Han).
Korean goverment stupid theory and very unreliable parole evidences
返信削除South Korea has insisted 200,000 But there are no objective proofs and witnesses of forcing by Japanese army from both South Korea and Japan.
South Korea inists 200,000 girls were raped and kidnapped by Japanese army. They say it is based on the number of 'Jyoshi teishintai' according to an Asahi newspaper article. But wait! 'Jyoshi teishintai' was a voluntary organization of 14-40 Japanese women and girls who worked in Japanese factories, and it was not applied to Koreans.
200000 were 1/5 of young women then. If they were raped and kidnapped,it should have been 400000 witness or any records like diaries, articles or something. But none.
There is only unreliable and always changing women's parole evidences.
McDougall reported in 1998 in United Nation, called brothels as rape center and insisted 3/4 Korean prostitutes was killed without any evidences at all using Joshiteishintai number 200000! McDougall said it is based on Japanese document.Even Yoshiaki Yoshimi who stands for the women pointed out there is no descriptions or documents like that. But McDougall ignored it and without any examination UN conlusion to blame at Japan was adopted.
Recently, a book 'Child of Empire' by Korean woman professor was published. She was anti-Japan and examined comfort women issue well and admitted that there were no force by Japanese but there were many kidnappings by Koreans.
Seoul University Prof. Ahn Byeong-jik also researched the parole evidences of 41 Korean comfort women in detail for 3 years and concluded their evidences are very unreliable. They often changes. Some said they went to Pusan, Niiigata Taiwan, Osaka where armies were not there. Some women were not born then. One women's evidence has changed 14 times, etc. And almost all of them didn't say they were kidnapped by Japanese army or Japanese clearly.
There parole evidences even include proofs some were working at UN and US army base in Chosen war.
In authentic Supreme courts in US and Japan, trials by Comfort women were lost.
Those liar comfort women lost a case at the Supreme Court of Japan on 28 March,2003 and lost in US Supreme Federal Court of the States on 21 Feb,2007.
It's a matter of course.
As objective proof of comfort women were just prostitute with high salary, there are some documents (US document, several newspaper recruiting ads, post bank passbook, diary).
返信削除There are many newspaper articles policemen were cracking down on Korean criminals (bad brothels and kidnappers). Zero Japanese criminal.
There are some public documents Japanese army banned illegal recruiting.
There is no witness, records and climes of the women kidnapped, raped or forced by Japanese, though there are many newspaper articles on Korean claims to Japanese to trifle things.
As proof of forced comfort women, there are only very unreliable parole evidences by the comfort women ( many are clearly lies and contradict and some are Korean war prostitutes).
And real horrible sex slaves by force evidenced in documents were present in UN and US army in Korea.

"The evidence found that the Korean government directly controlled Korean comfort women in US army base villages."(Nov.9.2013)
http://jpkren.seesaa.net/article/3797
Since there is a difference of expression between Japanese and a foreign language, foreign country's media have made untrue reports about the comfort-women issue.
返信削除For this reason, the Japanese government has been misunderstood about the comfort-women issue until now.
From the beginning the Japanese government has said "There were comfort women" ,"There was forcible taking."
However, it has said, <"Forcible taking" was the illegal action which was not directions of the Japanese government (Japanese army) but some offenders (a soldier or a prostitution racket company) performed.>
Actually, those war criminals were punishable by law.
However, Japanese people felt pity for them, and the Japanese government apologized to the people who became a misfortune as comfort women repeatedly, established the fund, and also paid it the compensation.
But the South Korean government blamed the South Korean comfort women who received it, and South Korean Govt said that money will be paid to the comfort women who did not receive it by South Korean fund-raising, and in order to use politically it recommended so that a receipt might be refused.
If you think that my talk is a lie, please compare the Japanese proginal text of Prime Minister Abe's discourse with the original text of news from abroad.
Please do not trust one-sided news but investigate the past truth by yourself.
But since South Korea say "Forcible taking was the directions of the Japanese government" but it's a lie.
Besides some Korean people set fire, committed theft, use violence in Japan.
So All Japanese people are angry, now.
In war that time, prostitution was globally lawful.
Although the Japanese government (Japanese army) prepared the prostitution place and sick management was carried out,but management is not carried out by Japanese government (Japanese army).
There are many data proving it.
Since "the army comfort women" of the Korean War and the Vietnam War have become clear around 2011 in South Korea, in order to turn away one's surrounding eyes from the South Korean government, South Korea made Japanese comfort women the big problem, and spread them all over the world.
Japanese people is not short-tempered.
But since the South Korean's action is too violent,it comes to the limit of patience and all Japanese are angry with South Korean.
You might not know that Japanese people have been irritated by Koreans' lies and their anti-Japan propaganda for a long time. I can't name all of numerous lies and fabrications Koreans have made in the past in such a short time.
返信削除First of all, Comfort Women for soldiers did exist in almost every army in the world, USA, French, German etc and even Korean army. Please read 『Against Our Will』 (Susan Brownmiller) 『Street Without Joy』 (Bernard B. Fall) 『Prostitution, Homosexualität, Selbstverstümmelung. Probleme der deutschen Sanitätsführung 1939–1945』 (Franz W. Seidler). Korean comfort women who were forcibly collected, kidnapped, abused, drugged, killed, and enslaved by US soldiers were being reported in 1950-70s.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jlfAqR8uBc
I don't understand why only Japan is being blamed for that as if every country except Japan is not guilty, if you claim Comfort Women system itself is a war crime. Secondly, you should listen to their testimonies throughout and chronologically from '90s to today. You'll find them unreliable because they have so many falsity, contradiction and inconsistency. They have changed their stories every time they testified and they've continued to be exaggerated. You can believe them because you are picking testimonies randomly without doubting and verifying them.
In the past 45 years since the WWII ended, there were so many best opportunities to accuse Japan, like Tokyo Trials and Japan/Korea treaty, but nonetheless no one in any Asian countries had appeared as a victim of comfort women until '90s. Self-proclaimed comfort women suddenly started to come out right after when the FICTITIOUS novel about comfort women was published.
Wikipedia is not even the source of historical facts. Every time some Japanese edit it, VANK (Voluntary Agency Network of Korea) who keeps watching wiki for 24h/365d re-edits them.
