Dear Mark CHRISTIANSON
[ID:14515]

Tokyo Marathon 2013 - Notification of selection

Thank you very much for your application for entry.
We regret to advise you that you have not been selected to run
the Tokyo Marathon 2013.
We look forward to your application for events in the future.

Finished a very sweaty, dangerous Turtle Half Marathon

Yesterday I successfully finished a half marathon in unbearably high October heat and humidity.

Marathons are not made to be run when the sun is burning at 30 degree centigrade.

As the news article below reports, 23 runners were hospitalized due to heat stroke, some in critical condition. I saw a few of these guys convulsing in the heat on the side of the road. Scary. Fortunately, the race was well-staffed with doctors and emergency personnel.

Somehow I finished. My time was about 2 hours 6 minutes on my watch. The official time will come in the mail in a few weeks.

If it weren't for the heat, I was hoping to run around 1hr 55 min, but I slowed down a lot to take extra water and to get under showers volunteers were giving with chilled water.

Finally, I want to thank my friends Toshi and Kazumi for inviting me after the run to his house nearby by for a badly needed shower and cold beer and good food. It was nice seeing their daughters Haruka and Honoko there and meeting friend Mr. Shimakura.

I won the lottery! + Marathon plans

I just got the following email:
-------------------------------------------

Dear Mark CHRISTIANSON
[ID-No: 12913 ]

Congratulations!  You have been selected in the lottery to run the 2012 Tokyo Marathon.
-------------------------------------------

I guess foreigners get to run every year. This will be my 5th year in a row.

I have to apologize to the 270,000 Japanese runners who failed in the lottery again this year. Only 30,000 can run, and the odds are 10:1 for getting in if you are a Japanese citizen.

Why not just let all 300,000 people run? I guess the streets of Tokyo may not be able to handle a mob of that size.

In any case, I feel very fortunate that I can run in this fun race again!

Please leave ideas for costumes as a comment below  : - )

Last year, my time was about 4 hours 53 minutes, and that was one of my slowest times ever. This year, I still want to try to beat 4 hours...if my knees don't hurt too much and if I can lose some weight...

This weekend I have a half-marathon in Arakawa and we will see how I feel running 21km at this point.

Also, for the full Tokyo marathon in March, I wonder if I can do a fundraiser. Anyone want to sponsor me with a donation to Red Cross or some other charity?

Born and evolved to run...barefoot

Interesting NY Times article today. Should I give up on my cushioned Asics and go for a more barefoot-style "foot glove"? I'm curious how that kind of running will feel, and apparently it is the natural way to go, possibly with fewer long term running injuries. Hmm...

My 2nd pair of ASICS Nimbus

I did quite well with these over the last two years, so I decided to get a new pair at Jock'n Jill again. After reading Born to Run and hearing about the possible long-term problems with cushioned shoes, I was a little leery to go with gel, but they feel great and I haven't had any foot or leg problems over the past 5 years with cushioned shoes. Hopefully they will get me through the next few marathons!

Running in Seattle over the past two weeks has been fabulous. Cool, dry, sunny. Just love Seattle in the summer. Running the trails in Hamlin Park in Shoreline was especially fun.

Tokyo Marathon 2011 - Enjoyed it nice and slow!

Last year I was pushing for a personal record, but this year I couldn't do the needed training, so I decided to take it easy.
I think my time was 4:53:31., which is my second slowest of my five marathons so far, my best being 4:17 last year on the same course in a cold sleet.

Today the weather was beautiful, but I didn't think I was going to get a personal best. My legs felt heavy from before the start, possibly because I did a 7km jog (the weather was too beautiful!) on Friday and also was running around most of Saturday for helping Michael's soccer practice etc.
Anyway, when I hit 20km, it already felt like 30km, and I barely kept joggin through to 29km where Megumi, Michael and Mei were cheering for me.

Thanks for coming all the way to Asakusa to cheer me on!
I decided to not push it in the last parts, and walked most of the distance between the 30km point and 40km point, just getting back into a jog at 40km to get under 5 hours.
My legs were stiff and cramping, but I was able to enjoy the whole distance. As Haruki Marakami writes in his book on running (and it may not be his original):
Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.

Nice costumes, Tokyoites! I especially liked a fully suited Barutan-Seijin and a bunch of GeGeGet no Kitaro ghosts.

Karuizawa Half-Marathon 1hr 46 min - Not bad!

http://www.sanspo-jigyo.com/karuizawa/about.html

A very half-marathon race running through the autumn colors of Karuizawa! Excellent weather.

Staying at Megumi Chalet the night before (4000yen including a nice breakfast) was a good choice.

Time: 1:46:20

The best part was that Megumi, my kids Michael and Mei, and my Mom all came to cheer me on at the 12km point! Thanks cheerleaders!

No photos with me now. Need to get them off my home computer.

4th Tokyo Marathon?

Just submitted my application for the 2011 Tokyo Marathon.Registration for Tokyo Marathon 2011

Apparently foreigners (even those living in Tokyo) are exempt from the high stakes lottery with almost 10 to 1 odds that makes it very difficult for Japanese runners to get in. Lucky me. I have Japanese running buddies who have applied every year and haven't been able to get in.

So far, I've run in 2008, 2009, and 2010, so this would be my fourth one. My best time was set this year with 4 hrs 17 min, and I hope I can break the four hour barrier this time. Got some running style analysis and new shoes with custom in-soles molded for me in Seattle and I'm ready to hit the training hard.

Running in the same marathon could get a bit old, but the Tokyo Marathon stays attractive to me just because of the sheer size of the event, with 35,000 runners pounding through the streets of Tokyo, and the sheer convenience of having the starting line less than an hour away in Shinjuku a few stops down the Chuo train line.

I hope I get in! I definitely need the goal to motivate me to do some more consistent running with longer distances...three weeks of hamburgers, pizza, and BBQs in the USA followed by a higher than usual rate of beer drinking on trips to Vietnam and Shizuoka have fattened me up nicely over the summer.

Time to get back in shape!

Visited the Earth Marathon Cafe--Go Kampei-chan!

My marathon buddy Toshi is a fan of Kampei-chan's Earth Marathon and proposed that we have a few drinks at the Earth Marathon izakaya in Shinjuku named

TISTAROCCA(チスタロッカ)

http://www.earth-marathon.com/2010/04/02/000016.html

Good takoyaki!

The Earth Marathon is an amazing project by 60 year-old comedian Kampei-chan to run around the globe. He has done 32,500km over 485 days, but now is taking time off in San Francisco for cancer therapy. I hope he will recover soon and finish his run.

I wasn't so interested in this prior to last week, but watching the videos of this comedian jogging through Iran and Turkmenistan and interacting with the local people changed my mind. I think this type of project can help mutual understanding between cultures a lot.

A fairly good run and a personal best at the Tokyo Marathon 2009

Thanks for your support!

Finish 42.195km 04:41:34 (split 0:17:37
(Estimated time adjusted for delayed start is probably 04:26:34)

Training for Tokyo Marathon 2009

>Dear Mr. MARK CHRISTIANSON. [ID - 0849]
Congratulations! You have been selected to run the Tokyo Marathon 2009.

I'm in! http://www.tokyo42195.org/2009/index_e
Despite lottery odds of 7.5 to 1, I got lucky again for the second year in a row and am scheduled to run the big one with 35,000 others on March 22nd. Strangely lucky? Or does the committee have a policy of letting non-Japanese skip the lottery? All three of my regular Japanese running buddies failed to get in.

Now I need to get serious after staying off most running for most of November due to a painful ligament problem in my left foot. I'm not 100% yet, but had no problem with a one hour run yesterday. Fortunately, university is out for Spring break from late Feb, so I should be able to get plenty of miles in.

My running plan and time goal? Last year's time was 4h 57min, so anything less than that would be nice. Need to drop some weight and increase distances gradually 10~15km in Dec, 15~20km in Jan, 20~25km in Feb, and do some 30km runs in March before cooling down in the previous week. Something like this.
